While trying to use up more and more pieces of scrap balls of yarn that I have lying around, here is a pattern that I came up with. There are probably others very similar, but in any case here is mine.
I used an I hook and two strands of worsted weight yarn held together(1 strand of bulky would also work). This makes a nice dense fabric that you can line or not.
The rounds are not joined, but worked in a spiral. I used a safety pin to mark the lst stitch in each round. This is moved up at the beginning of every round.
Chain 19
- sc in 2nd ch from hook(place marker in this stitch for the beginning st) work a sc in the next 16 ch sts, work 3sc in the last st – work a sc in the next 16 sts on the opposite side of the chain, work 2sc in the beginning ch, do not join. (38)
- 2sc in the 1st st (replace marker in 1st sc, you will do this every round), 1 sc in the next 16 sts, then 2sc in next st, 1sc in next st, 2sc in next st, 1sc in next 16 stchs, 2sc in next st, 1sc in next st.(42)
- sc in 1st st, 3sc in next st, 1sc in next 16 sts, 3sc in next st, 1sc in next 3sc, 3sc in next st, 1 sc in next 16 sts, 3sc in next st, 1sc in next 2 sts.(50)
- sc in next 2sts, 3sc in next st, 1sc in next 18 sts, 3sc in next st, 1sc in next 5sc, 3sc in next st, 1 sc in next 18 sts, 3sc in next st, 1sc in next 3 sts.(58)
- sc in next 3sts, 3sc in next st, 1sc in next 20 sts, 3sc in next st, 1sc in next 7sc, 3sc in next st, 1 sc in next 20 sts, 3sc in next st, 1sc in next 4 sts.(66)
- sc in next 4sts, 3sc in next st, 1sc in next 22 sts, 3sc in next st, 1sc in next 9sc, 3sc in next st, 1 sc in next 22 sts, 3sc in next st, 1sc in next 5 sts.(66) At this point my rectangle bottom measured 3-1/2″ x 8-1/2″
- sc in back loop of every stitch around – this will give you a bottom ridge which is very helpful if you decide to line the bag and want to use a piece of plastic canvas for the bottom.
- Continue working sc in every stitch moving marker up for each round. Change colors as needed or wanted. I worked 25 rows for the body and the height of my bag was 8-1/2″
This is a picture of the base, before the body is started.

I used purchased handles you can do whatever type of handle that pleases you. I made a flap to hold the handles. I crocheted 5 rows over three stitches and then sewed to the inside of the bag (4 times of course).
Experiment – Have FUN!!

eta(because someone asked): just wanted to add this link for Joann Fabric and Crafts. This is where I got my handles. Mine are size 8.25″ x 5.125″. I don’t think they carry the exact same handles, but they do have something similar. Hope this helps.

Excellent! I had purchased some purse handles and was looking for the perfect project for it. I think I’ve found it with your pattern! Thanks!
So cute and your finishing is beautiful!
Gorgeous! Even more beautiful in person…..
I’m definitely going to have to make one of these.
Very nice bag. Thanks for publishing the pattern. Really enjoyed your blog…I do lots of the same…knit, crochet, bead etc.
That bag is perfect for me. I am going to feed my bag addiction by making myself this purse. Thanks so much for sharing the pattern for free!
This is such a cute purse!!! I wish I knew how to do a lining – but I am totally gonna make this my next project!
